PRS 101 / ISTANBUL CLASSICS
Walking Tour (09:00*-13:00)

A morning walking tour with Blue Mosque (Closed on Friday mornings and the last minute occasions beyond our control and therefore no responsibility is assumed), famous for its mosaics with some 20.000 blue Iznik tiles and its six minarets, built in the name of Sultan Ahmet in the 17th century, one of the best examples of classical Turkish art. Cross through the Hippodrome, the scene of Byzantine chariot races, athletic events, victory celebrations and political activities of the old city where one can also see the “Obelisk of Egypt”, “Serpent Column” from Delphi, the “German Fountain of Wilhelm II” and the “Colossus”. Then proceed to Yildiz Park to visit Sale (Chalet) Kiosk, which resembles a hunting lodge and where a collection of exquisite carpets and furnishings can be seen, and Malta Kiosk, which dates from 1870 and once served as a prison: Imperial Porcelain Factory, opened in 1895 to meet the demand of the high quality European style ceramics; Yildiz Palace (Closed on Tuesdays), used to be Sultan Abdulhamid’s carpentry workshop, with the Theatre and Opera House. Visit the palace, which reflects the blend of various European architectural styles and built between 1843-1856 by Karabet Balyan, the court architect of Sultan Abdulmecid. After visiting the three-storied palace (Harem section is exclusive) with 285 rooms and 43 halls - one of them with a crystal chandelier of 4.5 tons - embarking the Sultan Boat to proceed to Beylerbeyi Palace (Closed on Mondays and Thursdays), the summer residence commissioned to be built by Sultan Abdulaziz between 1861-1865. In the morning visit to Yedikule Dungeons, built next to the city wall near the Byzantine Imperial Gate to protect the treasury, but later used as a dungeon. Then proceed to Panorama 1453 Museum to witness the conquest of Istanbul. Tekfur Palace (Blachernae Palace, dates back to the 13th century with is only surviving annex. Thereafter Miniaturk, located by the Golden Horn and one of the world's largest miniature parks with 105 models, 45 of which are from the structures in Istanbul and 45 of which are from Anatolia while the remaining 15 are from the Ottoman territories thattoday lie outside Turkey. Drive to Kemerburgaz for a relaxing afternoon where the well preserved aqueducts (Uzun Kemer), built during the Roman times and then extended by Sinan the Architect, are to be seen. The final visit is to be paid to Belgrade Forest for a short walk. Drive back to the hotel.

Day 01:                 
Drive to Kayseri to visit the 13th century Seljukian caravanserai Karatay. The next stop will be in Pınarbası for a break. Then drive to Tekir Plateau for lunch. After lunch, drive to Kahramanmaras where one can taste worldwide famous ice cream. Then drive to the hotel in Kahta to relax for a while. We will have dinner, and then overnight in the hotel (L, D).

Day 02:                 
Around 03:00 early morning drive up to top of the mountain where we will watch the beautiful sunrise between the colossal size statues and bead of the king and gods. After the sunrise we will visit the ruins of Mt. Nemrut. Then drive on to visit the ruins of Arsemia, a Roman bridge of Cendere and the tumulus Blackbird (Karakus). Arrive in to Kahta to have breakfast and some relaxation. Then drive to Sanlıurfa through the Ataturk Dam. After lunch in Sanliurfa, visit the Oriental Bazaar, Prophet Abraham’s cave and the pools of holy carp surrounding it. Then drive to Harran, a village of spellbinding mud—brick beehive houses where Abraham spent last years of his life as mentioned in the book of Genesis. Visit the ruins of Harran including city walls, the oldest Islamic University and the castle dated to 8th century.  After free time to walk around in Harran village drive back to hotel, overnight in Sanliurfa city (B, L, D).

Day 03:                 
Departure from Sanliurfa after breakfast. Next stop will be in Birecik, which is known for its Bald Ibis (Kelaynak) birds. We will visit the breeding farm and then drive back to Cappadocia (B, L).

* We will ascend Nemrut Dagi (Mt. Nemrut) from the southern side. The final ascent of 500 meters takes about 15 to 20 minutes from the parking lot. Hiking boots or very good walking shoes are highly recommended.

After breakfast sail to the other side of Dardanelles by a ferryboat and drive to Istanbul with visit to Gallipoli, historically famous for being the site of many battles - particularly involving the Allied Forces including Australians and New Zealanders during World War I. Arrive in Istanbul late afternoon and transfer to the hotel or airport (B).

EXTRA ACTIVITIES

PRS 351 / BALLOONING IN CAPPADOCIA (05:00-08:30)
Pick up from the hotel roughly one hour before the sunrise (App. 05:00 o’clock) and transfer to the base.  After serving tea, coffee and cookies while waiting for the other participants proceed to the take-off field designated for that day. After a safety briefing delivered by the pilot, climb in to the baskets and take off. Rise to the altitudes of several hundred meters to have a good view of the area and drift through the valleys and canyons for some 60 minutes. On landing, have a traditional celebration party with champagne and cakes. Thereafter transfer back to the hotel.

Pick up from the hotel and hit the road for the adventure. Drive from Goreme to Cavusin through Love Valley with frequent photo stops en route. On arrival to Cavusin town walk up to the old city carved on to the rocks and see the Church of St. John the Baptist, one of the oldest cave churches in Cappadocia. Thereafter, continue on to Ortahisar via Rose Valley with photo stops. After visiting the picturesque Ortahisar Castle proceed to Uzengi Valley driving along the brook bank to see the pigeon houses carved into the rocks. Then arrive in Mustafapasa Village (Sinasos), a former Greek town that was inhabited by the Greeks until the population exchange in 1924. After some relaxing time in the town drive back to Goreme via Pancarlik, Pigeons and Babaccik valleys. Transfer back to the hotel and end of our services.

Pick up from the hotel and hit the road for the adventure. Drive from Goreme to Ortahisar via Rose Valley with photo stops. After visiting the picturesque Ortahisar Castle proceed to Uzengi Valley driving along the brook bank to see the pigeon houses carved into the rocks. Then continue on to Gomeda Valley to explore the hidden beauties with the most greenery valley of Cappadocia. Proceed to Golgoli Hills bearing lovely rock formations near the Damsa Lake and location of the sky observation station. Then arrive in Mustafapasa Village (Sinasos), a former Greek town that was inhabited by the Greeks until the population exchange in 1924. After a short walk in the village with Greek mansions drive on to Urgup for lunch. Thereafter, drive to Cavusin via Red Valley and Rose Valley. On arrival to Cavusin town walk up to the old city carved on to the rocks and see the Church of St. John the Baptist, one of the oldest cave churches in Cappadocia. Day 05
Drive to Marmaris with visits to Patara, Xanthos and with cruise in the Dalyan Delta. The real highlight in Dalyan is
to take a small craft through a maze of reeds in the Dalyan Delta. The delta, with a long, golden sandy beach at its mouth, is a nature-conversation area, and a refuge for large sea turtles (caretta caretta) and blue crabs. A stop will be made at Kaunos which was an important city and port on the Mediterranean from 400 B.C. until the harbor silted up and the sea retreated 5km to the south. Day 01
Arrive Bodrum. You will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel.

Day 02
This morning visit the wonderful harbor and marina of Bodrum, full of expensive international yachts and elegant wooden Turkish gullets.  Visit the impressive Crusader Castle (Closed on Mondays. Except the main admission fee all the other sections are exclusive and need to be paid by the guests locally), which houses an excellent underwater museum. Built by the Knights of St John in 1402 to dominate the harbor, this castle is one of the last and finest examples of Crusader architecture in the east. Continue north to Kusadasi, with stops on the way to visit the well preserved Apollo Temple with its awesome gigantic pillars & head of Medusa at Didyma, and Priene - the first planned city in the ancient world. Overnight Kusadasi (B).

Day 03
Most of today will be dedicated to visiting Ephesus, which was undoubtedly one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient world. Impressive structures you will see include the Library of Celsus, Temple of Hadrian, the Theatre and the Odeon. You will also visit the beautiful Museum of Ephesus with its attractively

displayed statuary, mosaics and artifacts, and the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.  Nearby is the House of the Virgin Mary where she is believed to have spent her last years. In 1961, Pope John XXII proclaimed the House of the Virgin Mary at Ephesus to be sacred.  Also included in today’s tour is a visit of the Basilica of St. John, who came here with the Virgin Mary and wrote his Gospel (B).

Day 04
You will be driven north today to Assos, with a stop for lunch in Foca, a picturesque fishing village, known for its excellent seafood restaurants.  After lunch visit the hauntingly beautiful site of Pergamum; the Altar of Zeus, Temple of Dionysus, the library, the remarkable theatre, and the Asclepium of Pergamum - a famous health centre. Continue to Assos, considered the prettiest small harbor in the northern Aegean, with its impressive Hellenistic and Byzantine fortifications and the Temple of Athena on the summit, affording spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and the Greek island of Lesbos.  Overnight in Assos (B, D).

Day 05

Drive north to Canakkale to cross the strategic waterway, the Dardanelles, to Gallipoli, historically famous for being the site of many battles - particularly involving the Allied Forces including Australians and New Zealanders during World War I.  Visit Anzac Cove where the Allied Forces landed on 25 April 1915. 

Drive to Istanbul along the northern shores of the Sea of Marmara.  Arrive in Istanbul and transfer to the hotel or overnight (Hotel in Istanbul is exclusive) (B).
